Walking is so good for us! You don’t need any special equipment, training or much time. We need 150 minutes of physical activity a week and if you walk to work just a few times a week you achieve this. Walking is so easy and simple. You should try it in your own workplace wellbeing campaign. Here’s why:
1. You’ll Get Them Fit
Walking is a great form of aerobic exercise and it counts towards the weekly 150 minutes. As they do more they’ll find they don’t get as worn out which means they’ll be adapting and getting fitter. They will arrive at work far more energised than those who commute by non-active means like driving the car.
2. Fewer Health Issues
The aerobic component to walking gets them in shape. This lowers the risk of many, often preventable, chronic diseases, especially obesity related. They’ll lower their risk of type 2 diabetes, heart disease and cancer just by going for a walk each day.
3. Increase Brain Function
A study found that walking just 1.5 miles, 3 times a week can reverse cellular ageing in the brain. If they walk a few times a week they’ll be increasing their brain function, alertness and power which can have a huge impact on their work performance.
4. Boost Mental Health
Walking causes chemical changes in the brain which release endorphins which can positively influence their mood. Their self-image and confidence increases, as well as their ability to think clearly and be more mindful. Their risk of depression and anxiety is instantly slashed.
5. Save Money
You’ll be killing two birds with one stone. When your employees actively commute they’ll save money on things like petrol and public transport. They also save on things like exercise classes and gym memberships. They will be getting their weekly physical activity in just by walking to and from work. It’s so easy.
Implement Walking into Your Workplace
Encourage Active Travel
Your workplace wellbeing campaign needs to encourage walking to and from work. If you encourage active travel to your employees, they’ll find it far easier to get those active minutes in.
Start a Workplace Walking Group.
An after work or lunchtime walking club can get your employees together to enjoy physical activity. Exploring the local area outside the office can create a sense of connection between colleagues. Set up a walking league from Fitlink’s dashboard and get them walking their way to fitness.
Encourage Walking in the Workday
Ensure that employees have the chance to go for a walk during lunch. Walking meetings are great too so encourage your staff to walk and talk more often.
